How we check what we publish, whose name it carries, and how we correct mistakes.
No political party, alliance, candidate, government office or advertiser decides what we publish. We take no money or direction from any of them, and the site carries no advertising. Everything we publish is checked to the same standard, whatever its politics.
Most of what you read here is readers' opinion: a citizen's own view, published under their name or without it. Some pieces are the site's own reporting, published under the Jonogoner Kotha desk. An opinion is its writer's view, not ours; our own reporting is held to the standard below.
Every figure, quote and claim of fact in a desk piece comes from a source we name, such as government statistics, court and parliamentary records, research, or reporting by established media, and where the source is online it is linked in the text. Before publication the piece is reviewed, and the page shows the reviewer's name and the date.
A moderator reads every opinion before it is published and checks it against the community guidelines. Publishing an opinion is not an endorsement, and we do not check every claim in it; a part that breaks the guidelines, such as defamation, hate or someone's private information, is removed, or the opinion is declined with the reason given. Moderators never change a writer's meaning. Every published opinion shows who reviewed it and when.
Readers may publish without their name, because many people in Bangladesh cannot safely say what they think under it. Every writer signs in to write, so the site knows who wrote each opinion even when readers do not, and the same rules apply to everyone. Our own reporting is always published under the Jonogoner Kotha desk.
When we get a fact wrong, we fix it and say so. A dated correction note is added at the end of the piece saying what was changed, and the note stays there for good. Spelling and formatting are fixed without a note. When a piece changes after publication, the page shows when it was updated. To ask for a correction, write to us through the contact page and name the page and the statement.
Anyone named or described in a piece can ask to reply, and we will consider publishing the reply beside it. Complaints about a decision, a piece or a moderator go through the contact page; we read every message.
